This high gloss built-in transformed this whole room in this Manhattan apartment and our client designed the room around this new conversation piece. We sprayed the existing, previously painted built-in bookshelf in a high gloss finish. In addition to this, we replaced the filler piece at the top so that the piece goes to the ceiling, supplied an additional shelf to client’s specification, painted the entire room including the floor. I also removed the old baseboards and installed new baseboards that better aligned with the client’s vision for the space. What I want to emphasize about this project is the bookshelf was really not in great shape and my clients often wonder if they need to get all new doors. In most cases I can paint the existing doors and you’d only need to replace the doors if you didn’t like the profile or if you were reconfiguring the piece in some way.
We can achieve a high clarity, mirror-like finish in deep, dark colors
Deep colors like these are very unforgiving in every respect and showcase the level of craftsmanship. Typically for a finish like this, we will apply up to 6 total coats between primer and topcoats. First we will inspect the substrate, ensure that it is stable and not moving or cracking. So if we’re finishing over drywall or plaster, we’ll look over the whole surface, looking for screw pops, unsecured boards or common areas where we find issues near doors or window frames. Likewise, if we’re working with woodwork, we’ll inspect the glue joints. If we see any issues along these lines that we can’t address in-house, we’ll bring it to the attention of other tradespeople. Then we move on to sanding to make sure our coating system adheres to the substrate. Then follows those coats of primer I mentioned, whose purpose is to build the coating so that we can sand it back. This sanding process for gloss is very important and it’s a large part of the cost. We’re “flat-blocking” the surface with our sanding tools to get the surface not only smooth but also flattening out any high areas and moving up in the sanding grits along the way. Once we sand the pieces flat, we will do a deep clean of our spray booth or job-site and configure our fans and air scrubber to replace the air in the space every 2 minutes.
Darker colors achieve a deeper, crisper reflection and lighter ones will only show the mirror-like reflection from a sharp angle. This off-white Brooklyn Heights kitchenette project completed in May 2021 shows the level of gloss you can expect for a lighter color.
